EC Fans

EC INFORMATION

By now you have learnt that EC is a better, more efficient motor... but it doesn't just stop there. Utilizing EC motors in your systems offers you so many benefits that we've compiled a page completely dedicated to understanding EC.
In short, here are some of the reasons why EC is so important:
EC fans can use as little as 1/3 the energy of industry standard fans.
EC fans offer easy, quiet, efficient speed control.
EC fans have all the electronics built into the fan.
EC fans make your other components more efficient.
EC fans save you money.
EC fans make your products more competitive.
With this in mind, can you afford to use old technology?

Technical Introduction - EXTERNAL ROTOR MOTOR
The basis of ebm-papst EC motors is an external rotor motors system which is particularly suited to meet the requirements of air moving solutions. The integration of the motor inside the impeller results in extremely compact designs and hence high performance density.

The high efficiency helps to keep energy costs at a low level. Temperature rise is low since an ebm-papst EC motor generates approximately only 1/3 the heat loss of conventional AC single- and three-phase motors.

BASIC PRINCIPLE OF EC MOTOR
The EC motor is comparable to the DC shunt motor, except that the magnetic field is produced by permanent magnets in the motor. The commutation is done electronically and therefore without wear. Depend on the layout and application, EC motors can be operated from a DC power supply or via a separate commutation unit from an AC mains supply.
ADVANTAGES OF EC FANS
The EC external rotor motor is very compact because of its integrated bearing system. This motor installed inside an impeller results in a very low profile ventilation unit. All rotating parts are directly finned to one component and dynamically balanced. This guarantees low loads on the bearing systems. There is optimum heat transfer out of the motor because of its exposure to the airflow inside the impeller. This contributes to longer motor life. The electronics can be either integrated on to a PCB inside the motor or can be a separate unit.

ebm-papst has more than 20 years experience with EC motors. This know-how in innovation and manufacturing is reflected by several hundred national and international patents. ebm-papst offers customized designs and solutions and is a world-wide partner to industry leaders.

The various advantages of the EC motor resulting from the use of state-of-the-art electronics make it the recommended choice for both air and drive engineering:

  • High efficiency resulting in energy saving and fast amortization
  • Continuously variable speed control by analogue or digital input
  • Simple speed control or more complex closed-loop control options can be integrated at competitive cost
  • Cross-linked bad bus-connected installations are easy to achieve
  • High performance density, i.e. compact design
  • Temperature and airflow-dependent speed control options (intelligent fans)
  • Speed and/ or airflow monitoring
  • Long life expectancy and robust design comparable to an asynchronous motor
  • Built-in protective systems (Looked rotor protection, reverse polarity protection)
  • Direct supply from line voltage 230 V AC options
